Temptation, oh temptation.

Temptation is an obstacle in life that everyone has to face, whether you like it or not. As human beings, we are tempted to do things, from eating something really tasty that you're not supposed to eat (like if your on a diet), to murder. Everyone faces temptations of different types daily. A lot of people seem to give in to temptations thinking that if temptations do come, there is no other option but to give in. "These temptations are too strong for me," some say. "Before I realised it, I had already given in to temptations. I don't know what else to do." Others may say. If this was true, that we cannot help but to give in, then there would be no hope of ever overcoming temptations. It is a big issue, but it is something anyone can deal with, even if they don't believe that they can.

What got me thinking about this issue was when I was reading the book Footnote To Murder By L.A. Taylor the main character, Marge, leaves work when tempted by a friend who offered to buy her lunch, even when she had a deadline very soon and she was far behind in her work. This is obviously not a very interesting example or one that you would normally connect to temptation right away, but I did because I really relate to it. This actually happens to me all the time. For example, I will be doing my homework on a Sunday night after a busy weekend, and
I see my phone and I think to myself, "just a few minutes and then I'll get back to work," and the next thing I know, it's 2 in the morning and I still haven't done any of my homework. Sometimes I've even fallen asleep and woken up Monday morning, with my glorious bedhead, and in the same clothes I was wearing last night, with all my homework to do. I'm sure many people can relate. This is an example of temptation that could've been solved so easily, by just leaving my phone in another room.

Temptation is not only something individuals deal with, it affects the world as a whole. For example, big businesses and industries, are tempted by money. Yes, most people are tempted by money, I mean, it's great, but these businesses have a larger affect on the world for the most part. Think about it. Large businesses make stuff that people buy. The business has to produce lots of these products, sometimes in factories, causing lots of pollution in the air, and in the water. Or they could be using children or over working people for little pay to make their products, which applies to so many people. This has a very large affect on the world, and is something that can be fixed. If only the owners of these businesses or really anyone in any situation dealing with temptation could take a minute and think, is this right? Is it worth the consequences? And even if there are no immediate consequences, is it worth the effect on the world and its future? People often pick the more tempting offer thinking it'll be better but in reality it can often be the worse choice in the long run.

In conclusion, temptation is something that everyone encounters, and has to deal with. There's no way around it. But before you give in to temptation, ask yourself, what will really be better in the long run? The short cut, or the high road? The short cut almost always seems the better way but often the better things come from the satisfaction of working hard. So when the next situation regarding temptation comes up in your life, think about it, and make the right decision.
